Our story

We’ve changed with the times.
Our principles haven’t.

Mayfield has evolved from antiques and reproduction furniture to the broad mix of furniture, beds and mattresses we sell today — always with quality at the heart of what we choose.

The 1960s
Mayfield Antiques begins

Our first store opened in premises formerly home to Mayfield Leather Tanners — known locally as The Leather Works. We kept the Mayfield name and began as Mayfield Antiques, initially opening only on Sundays while the rest of the week was spent delivering orders and sourcing stock from local auctions.
The next chapter
From antiques to reproduction furniture

As tastes changed, we introduced reproduction furniture in mahogany, yew and elm. That led to the name Mayfield Reproduction Furniture, with pieces sourced directly from skilled UK cabinet makers and carefully finished to a high standard.
The 1990s
A bigger showroom and changing styles

Pine grew in popularity, followed by strong demand for oak. Around this time we moved to the larger premises we still occupy today. As traditional craftsmen retired and factories closed, the reproduction furniture market became harder to source at the standard we expected.
2004 onwards
Mayfield Furniture as you know us today

With oak furniture leading the market and little reproduction stock remaining, we dropped “Reproduction” from our name. It marked a more modern and versatile era for the business, while keeping the same approach to product quality and customer service.
Today
Still proudly independent

Now into our third generation, there are no shareholders or national head office shaping the way we work. We can focus on choosing products we believe in, giving honest advice and looking after customers in a way that feels personal.

Since day one, we’ve had a physical store where customers can see, touch and try the products they’re considering. Furniture and mattresses are personal purchases, and seeing the quality first-hand can make all the difference.

Delivery handled with care

We’ve been delivering furniture ourselves for more than 50 years. Before a delivery date is arranged, items are unpacked and checked for transit damage, missing parts and finish issues, helping us catch problems before they reach your home.

Our team delivers to your room of choice, completes required assembly and takes the packaging away. It’s a more complete service than leaving a large boxed item at the doorstep.

Old mattress prepared for specialist recycling

Remove, donate, recycle

Replacing furniture often creates another problem: what to do with the old item. For a small charge, we can collect unwanted furniture on a like-for-like basis when your new purchase is delivered.

Where suitable, reusable furniture can be donated to local charities. Old beds and mattresses can also be sent to a specialist recycler, where they are broken down into component materials rather than simply going to landfill.
