The short answer

The Odyssey 13,500 and Platinum 12,500 are not identical mattresses, but they share several important characteristics including Cortec pocket spring technology, natural fillings, turn-free construction and a choice of tensions.

What they have in common

  • Mattress type: Both mattresses simply need rotating parodically.
  • Main spring system: Both use Harrison Spinks Cortec Quad pocket spring technology.
  • Natural fillings: Both use extensive natural upholstery and sustainable ecotex.
  • Tensions: Both are available in the same three main tension choices.

Key differences

  • Spring count: The headline spring counts differ, but spring count alone should not be used to judge comfort.
  • Additional springs: The supplementary spring systems are configured differently.
  • Side stitching: The Odyssey mattress features an additional row of side stitching.

Both use Harrison Spinks' Cortec™ Quad Revolution® pocket spring technology, natural upholstery and a turn-free design. They are also available in the same principal tension choices. The main differences are found in their additional spring layers, natural filling blends and finishing details.

Does a higher spring count make the Odyssey better?

Not necessarily. Mattress spring counts can be misleading when viewed on their own because the headline figure includes different types and sizes of springs positioned throughout the mattress.

The Odyssey combines its main Cortec™ Quad Revolution® spring system with Posturfil pocket springs, Microlution Airflow springs and HD 4000 and HD 2500 micro springs. The Platinum uses the same Cortec™ Quad Revolution® system alongside HD 2500 and HD 4000 micro springs and Posturfil pocket springs.

This means the difference between 12,500 and 13,500 shouldn't simply be interpreted as the Odyssey having 1,000 additional conventional mattress springs. The key distinction is the Odyssey's Microlution Airflow spring layer, which the Platinum doesn't use – a different supplementary spring arrangement that may influence how the comfort layers respond, feel and breathe, rather than a straightforward increase in support.

Spring count is only one part of choosing a mattress. Its tension, upholstery, construction and how it feels when you lie on it are equally important.

How do the natural fillings compare?

Both mattresses make extensive use of natural fibres, although their upholstery blends aren't exactly the same.

The Platinum layers a British wool and viscose blend with a Yorkshire wool blend, a British wool blend, cooling cotton and Sustainable Ecotex. The Odyssey layers a British wool and viscose blend with cooling cotton, British wool, a British wool and mohair blend, and Sustainable Ecotex.

Both draw on natural fibres grown and processed by Harrison Spinks on their own Yorkshire farm, so the sustainability credentials are closely matched, even though the specific blend proportions – and the Odyssey's additional mohair layer – set them apart.

Are the two mattresses built the same way?

Largely, yes, though there's one notable difference. The Odyssey is finished with four rows of hand side stitching, while the Platinum uses three. More rows of side stitching typically mean firmer, more reinforced edge support, so this is a genuine construction distinction rather than a marketing figure.

Beyond that, both are part of Harrison Spinks' Turn Free collection, needing only regular rotation rather than seasonal turning, and both are available in the same core range of tensions – Gentle, Medium and Firm.

Which one should you choose?

For most sleepers, the practical difference between the two will be subtle. The Odyssey's additional Microlution Airflow layer and extra row of side stitching may suit those who want maximum edge support and breathability, while the Platinum offers very similar comfort, natural fillings and turn-free convenience with a slightly simpler construction.

About our mattress comparisons

Mattress manufacturers can produce different models and specifications for different retailers and retail groups. Similar-looking mattresses may therefore have different model names, spring counts, fillings or construction. Our comparison guides do not claim that differently named mattresses are identical. They are designed to explain published specification differences and help you identify models that may be worth trying.
